International air travel into and out of Wellington is primarily serviced by Wellington International Airport (WLG), the third-busiest airport in New Zealand, handling over 5.1 million passengers annually. The international terminal of the airport was partially built in 1986 and has been upgraded in a piecemeal fashion periodically since 2005. In 2010, Studio Pacific Architecture completed work on an expansion to the international terminal titled “The Rock,” which was a radical departure from the established architectural and stylistic style of the existing buildings.
